My Work. Contextualization
Samurai and BaseballFor my first project of the year I chose to study the topic of how the Samurai is seen in Japanese baseball and American baseball. I looked into the Japanese Samurai when it was in Japanese culture from 1100 to 1868 and I also looked at just the Japanese culture during that time period.
EnglishFor this project, I read two books and parts of other books. I also watched The Last Samurai to get a physical understanding of what they looked like. One of the two books I read was Samurai Strategies: 42 Martial Secrets from Musashi's Book of Five Rings by Boyé Lafayette De Mente which is about a Samurai Warrior who is considered the best of the best. Then I read the book The Samurai Way of Baseball to understand how both the Samurai way of living and baseball are brought together. So I end up drawing a baseball catcher and writing words around him describing his Samurai attributes.
HistoryFor history I chose to study the Samurai way of life. At first I, studied the culture of Japan during the Tokugawa Shogunate time who ruled from 1603 to 1868. During this time 10% of the population in Japan was a Samurai Warrior. Later, I studied individual baseball players and managers in American baseball that are non-Japanese but carry the traits and attributes that of a Samurai Warrior during the 1100 to the 1868 time period. I ended up choosing two baseball players, Derek Jeter who played for New York Yankees and Cal Ripken Jr. who played for the Baltimore Orioles. Then I chose two managers, Bo Porter who managed for a couple teams the most known was him managing for the Houston Astros and Walt Weiss a player and manager of multiply baseball teams during his time but is most known for managing the Colorado Rockies.
ArtFor my art part of the first project I chose to study specifically the change throughout time of the Japanese uniforms. Along with that I also am writing which player in baseball connects to each chapter in the book the Samurai Strategies: 42 Martial Secrets from Musashi's Book of Five Rings by Boyé Lafayette De Mente. I would use the ideas I was reading to help build the art portion which ended up being a study of Japanese baseball uniforms and studying the samurai uniforms and showing their journey throughout history.
